    • Dawud Wharnsby

"When we look to the Qur'an and examine the histories of past prophets, we see individuals chosen by The Creator to lead, guide and inspire - not only the people they lived among, but also to us in our time. One common factor we see from the examples of their lives is how - as humans - they often perceived their own weaknesses over their own potential. They saw themselves as "disabled" when The Creator saw them as "more than able" to carry out their prescribed tasks.

Moses was insecure of his "inability" to speak clearly when commanded by The Creator to seek the release of the Israelites from bondage. Muhammad was commanded to "read" and, being unlettered, did not initially see himself as "able" to complete the task of reciting the Qur'an. Abraham was insecure of his "inability" to fully comprehend the greatness of The Creator and warrant being a prophet to his people.

Moses' brother, Aaron, became his linguistic assistant... the help of scribes and the tool of memorization assisted Muhammad with the preservation of The Holy Qur'an... and a uniquely divine visual aid/example helped to educate Abraham in matters of faith, granting him the honour of being known as "The Friend of God".

Therefore - it is not our physical "abilities" or "disabilities" that measure our success in living as servants to God and helpers to mankind. Rather, it is the spiritual passion we exercise that determines our success in living up to the God given potential we hold.

We must not allow our assistive devices and alternative methods of communication or learning define who we are, "disabling" us from sharing the best of the talents we have with our communities.

Together, working with and supporting an organization like CAMD, we can foster a community where we may all work and live up to our spiritual, physical and educational potential - regardless of the challenges we may experience with our perceived or hidden disabilities."

  • Shahina Siddiqui - President Islamic Social Services Association Inc.

"This is to express my gratitude and support to The Canadian Association of Muslims with Disabilities, CAMD for their project "Towards an Inclusive Ummah - Muslims with disabilities speak out". This project has shown courage and imitative in an area that has been given very little attention. Muslim families who are living with challenges of raising children with special needs and adults with disabilities face challenges that the larger Muslim community is unaware of. Leaving these brothers and sisters without community support and a social net work that is both spiritually and culturally compatible.

As Muslim leaders it is imperative that we show by example that these special members of our community are welcome and appreciated. This can be done by accommodating their special needs there by encouraging their participation and by incorporating recommendations made by this project. This is the least we can do."
