A blend of technology, spirituality and personality flavoured the evening with something for everyone to reflect upon regardless of the changes to the program. The evening opened traditionally with the recitation of the Quran with a twist. The reciter was a native Nova Scotian, a former pro-wrestler, AbdulMalik Claire, who also happens to be blind. Mississauga's Mayor McCallion, Minister Fonseca and Omar Alghabra were all in attendance along with approximately 450 others. A pre-recorded appeal was made by renowned scholar, Imam Zaid Shakir, based out of California, asking the Muslim community to honour the example of Prophet Mohammed who included and accommodated people with disabilities. Shifting attitudes toward people with disabilities was reiterated by Shaykh Uthman Khan who told the story of Imam Shatibiyy, a famous scholar in Islamic history. CAM-D's vision "To create a global village that includes full access for persons with disabilities" is truly a village was demonstrated by skyping with the evening's keynote, Shuaib Chalklen, UN Rapporteur on Disability who lives in South Africa. Mr. Chalklen could not make thr trip at the last minute. Sheikha Hessa Al-Thani sent her regrets for not being able to participate as planned. Rima Alsalah, Behavioural-Educational Consultant, introduced her 18-year-old son, Ali, and shared their journey of Autism, captivating the audience with the reality of having a child with an intellectual disability. Sabira Najfi, member of the Deaf community, highlighted the importance of access to ASL interpretation and certainly proved that Deaf people have something to say. A quick appeal for funds was made by Sheikh Abdullah Idris Ali, Deputy Secretary General of ISNA Canada who told the audience that CAM-D had made the case and it was the community's responsibility to support their efforts. "Funds will be used to structure the CAM-D Family Network and continue public awareness activities as well as self-advocacy and planning for future activities," stated Rabia Khedr, CAM-D's Executive Director. "This is our first fundraising gala and could not have been made possible without the hard work of many volunteers, friends and family. I would be negligent if I did not mention prominent members of the community like Dr. Tasneem Zahir who inspired the idea of a fundraiser and generously gave her time because she wanted to step out beyond the stem cell research lab at the University of Toronto and touch people's lives." Sandra Carprenter, Executive Director of Centre for Independent Living in Toronto, CAM-D's leading community partner, attended the entire event and remarked that, "I learned much more about CAM-D's objectives and philosophy tonight. I am confident that we will continue to work together to support our mutual work to advance disability rights and accessibility for everyone." CAM-D, on behalf of its community partners, apologises for canceling the public lecture on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (which was to be held on March 30) since Mr. Chalklen was unable to be here in person. Stay tuned to an update about Muslims with Disabilities International, MDI, which was also launched Sunday night. CAM-D Presents the first class for Deaf Muslims...
